1798/7 Ten Dollar NGC AU50 Ex: Byron Reed
BD-1, 9 X 4 Stars, R.4+. Less than 100 examples known in all grades, including cleaned and damaged pieces. Only two varieties exist for the year, and both display heavy overdates. The other variety, BD-2, is undeniably rare, with less than 30 survivors extant. As a result, heavy collector demand is placed on the 1798/7 ten dollar issue, which is clearly reflected in any current price guide. The NGC Census Report shows a total of 31 pieces graded for this issue. Oddly, the population in AU50 is documented as zero, which is obviously an error.
Auction appearances of 1798/7 eagles are remarkably infrequent. The most recent appearances include an AU58 example that sold in Stack’s June 2008 sale of The Huskey Collection for $103,500, and an MS61 specimen, which realized $138,000 in Goldberg’s September 2008 auction of The Ohringer Collection. No other example, regardless of certified grade, has sold since 2008. This pleasing lemon-gold specimen displays light abrasions throughout—commensurate with the assigned grade—and ample luster within the protected areas of the devices. Ex: Byron Reed. PCGS Price Guide: $60,000 in XF40, $95,000 in AU55. Valued in Trends at $75,000 in AU50 and $140,000 in MS60.
