The 1803 Capped Bust Right eagle claims a mintage of 15,017 pieces, with six die varieties known for the date. The coin offered here represents the very scarce BD-5 variety, showing large reverse stars and an intriguing small extra star imbedded in the last cloud. Although this variety was known to earlier numismatists, the extra star was unnoticed until Harry Bass discovered it on a specimen he purchased in 1966. The reason for the extra star has never been satisfactorily explained. The BD-5 variety probably accounted for 3,000-5,000 pieces of the reported mintage, with a surviving population of 90-110 examples in all grades. This coin is an impressive specimen with well-detailed design elements that show just a touch of softness on the lower bust. The pleasing surfaces retain almost all of their original mint luster.
