Three mints made half eagles in 1845, but Philadelphia's total was by far the largest, well over 400,000 pieces struck for circulation. This MS61 example is surprisingly scarce, as most survivors of the issue are in the AU grades at best. The yellow-gold surfaces are surprisingly clean for the grade. The strike is quite sharp throughout, and a bit of die clashing appears on the reverse. A nice piece for the grade.
