Los Angeles CA, Feb 26 (Tangible Investments) - by James O’Dell - The Gold price hit four month highs in overnight trade, when it reached $1,345.35 an ounce, after trading flat on Tuesday to close at $1,336.00 an ounce. Investors continue to question the strength of the U.S. economic recovery as the latest data shows gains in home prices slowed in December, signaling a slowdown in the housing recovery. Silver dipped a modest $0.15 or 0.68 percent to close at $21.78 an ounce as shorter term investors took profits. Platinum edged up 0.1 percent to $1,434.75 an ounce while palladium rose 0.2 percent to $733.75 an ounce.
 
Meanwhile, following the shuttering of the Mt Gox Bitcoin Exchange, several digital currency exchanges issued statements as the industry attempts to try and reassure investors of the virtual currency's viability. Mt. Gox was based in Tokyo and the only U.S. entity at this time known to have any oversight of its operations, whatsoever, is the anti-money laundering unit of the U.S. Treasury, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).

The spokesman for FinCEN, Steve Hudak, confirmed that the agency was "aware of the reports regarding Mt. Gox," but had no further comment. Since Bitcoin holdings are deposited by investors into digital wallets at specific exchanges, the Mt. Gox shutdown might be compared to a bank that has closed its doors, leaving investors unable to access their funds.

Mt. Gox, which started as a venue for trading cards, was not only a founding member, but also a board member of the Bitcoin Foundation. The site reportedly grew quickly when there were few exchanges and had been a Bitcoin Exchange since 2010.
