1805 Half Eagle NGC MS64
BD-1, R.3+. Five die varieties are known for this rare issue, with BD-1 being the most available. Of course “available” is a relative term, considering that a mere 200 or so examples of this variety exist in all grades. Even combining the extant population of all five varieties, less than 400 half eagles dated 1805 have survived the past two centuries.
Again, the quoted population of coins is regardless of grade, and includes holed, cleaned, scratched, worn, or otherwise impaired examples. Mint State survivors are undeniably rare. The NGC Census Report documents 30 pieces at the MS64 level, with only two finer specimens. However, based on a careful review of auction records over the past 15 years, the population figures are skewed to the high side, since fewer than ten 1805 half eagles have crossed the auction block in near-Mint State condition during that timeframe.
The current offering displays memorable, satiny luster across stunning orange-gold surfaces on both sides. The design is well centered and the strike is bold for the issue, making this specimen a choice example for the assigned grade. As of March 2010, the PCGS Price Guide lists this issue at $93,000 for a PQ example, and increases dramatically to $185,000 in Gem condition. Similarly, the current value listed in Trends is $95,000 at the MS64 level, with no price suggested for MS65.
