1875 Twenty Cent Piece, NGC MS67
As of June 2009, NGC has certified a mere five 1875 twenty cent pieces at the MS67 level, with none finer. Due to this issue’s absolute rarity in Superb Gem condition, Trends does not provide a price beyond MS66. The PCGS Price Guide, however, documents a value of $32,500 for the issue in MS67 (June 2009). The top two auction appearances of MS67 1875 twenty cent pieces are $23,000 (2004, PCGS) and $20,700 (2006, NGC). Amazingly, a review of auctions over the past few decades reveals a staggeringly low total of only four auction appearances of this issue in MS67. More recently, in July 2008, an 1875-S in NGC MS67 realized $23,000 at auction—an important fact, since S-Mint 1875 twenty cent pieces are far more common than their P-Mint counterparts.
The current offering is a work of art as much as it is a rare coin. Breathtaking amber iridescence radiates from both sides, which are framed by variegated electric-blue and russet toning at the peripheries. The razor-sharp strike is reminiscent of a proof issue, and one must wonder if this piece was specially prepared by someone close to the Mint, who then carefully preserved it for the sake of posterity.
