Appealing 1905 Twenty Dollar NGC PF64
The twenty dollar denomination is the largest of all regular issue United States coins and was authorized for production on March 3, 1849. This design remained relatively unchanged until the last production year of 1907. As such, it is one of the most highly collected design series of all US gold denominations. With a proof mintage of only 92 coins, the 1905 double eagle is considerably rarer than several other later date proofs. PCGS and NGC combined population figures are surely exaggerated at 15 coins in PR64, with 3 finer. More accurately, auction records indicate that perhaps only 30 to 40 examples of this proof issue remain in all grades. When you consider collector “date pressure” due to the rarity of business strikes, the 1905 $20 is truly a date not often seen.
Auction records show a range of prices realized over the last 5 years of $34,500 to $46,000 in PR64 condition. The only PR65 example seen during that period brought over $100,000. The specimen offered here has a slight patina over the reflective mirror finish—indicative of a coin that possesses originality and is, as such, premium for the assigned grade. The Collector’s Universe Price Guide values the 1905 PR64 $20 at $50,000.
