Rare 1804 Ten Dollar AU53 NGC
BD-1, Crosslet 4, High R.4. The year 1804 is an incredibly challenging date in the Heraldic Eagle ten dollar series. In fact, it is the most difficult issue to locate, being even harder to obtain than the 1798/7 rarity. Only one die marriage was employed to produce 3,755 eagles dated 1804 and today less than 100 coins are extant in all grades—with or without damage. Mint State survivors are nearly unheard of. As of May 2010, NGC has certified a mere 52 examples in all grades combined. While that number may seem high relative to other early U.S. gold rarities, one must consider that NGC—by comparison—has certified 438 eagles dated 1799, with 109 pieces for 1800, 396 for the 1801 issue, and 191 examples of 1803-dated eagles.
It is important to note that the specimen offered here is one of only four approved by CAC as of May 2010, thus guaranteeing that it is solid for the assigned grade. The last certified AU53 example of this rare issue to cross the auction block was in Heritage’s January 2006 FUN sale. More recently, an AU55 1804 eagle sold at the same firm’s July 2009 Platinum Night auction. That coin realized $69,000, which is more than the current Trends value of $62,500 for AU55 and $50,000 for AU50.
