1907 $10 Indian Wire Rim NGC MS-66 CAC
The Indian ten dollar gold piece is among the most beautiful of all U.S. coinage issues. However, the 1907 Wire Rim variant is a standout within the series due to its unique appearance and esthetic qualities. Very “medallic” by design, this eagle is most representative of what the designer, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, envisioned for a ten dollar gold coin at the request of Theodore Roosevelt. The obverse of the coin features the head of Liberty crowned with an Indian war bonnet while a gallant eagle with folded wings graces the reverse. Mint records indicate that all 500 examples struck were given to dignitaries and V.I.P.’s. These non-collector recipients were not the best custodians, and many survivors today were cleaned or mishandled through the years.
As of January 2011, NGC has graded 204 specimens with the population in Superb Gem condition numbering a scant 20 coins. Furthermore, this is the only NGC MS-66 deserving of a CAC grade verification. Collectors Universe Price Guide lists this issue at $130,000 in MS66, with auction prices realized topping $109,000 within the last two years.
